How can you turn something unhealthy into healthy in cooking?

Wednesday 30 December 2009

I wanted to know how to make things healthy with some unhealthy things, is there a way to do that?

It depends on what ingredients are in there. Sometimes it even depends on how many calories are in the food/drink. For example, say you had a taco at Taco Bell and you admitted it was unhealthy, how would you change up your recipe of the taco your way? Well, for a start, you can add some tomatoes and chopped lettuce into the taco to make it yummy and healthy. I didn’t think that example made sense with the question so let me try this example. If you had a sandwich that had burger meat, mayonnaise, mustard, and pickles, you would probably notice that it’s unhealthy. Here is where the magic begins. You should probably scrape off part of the mayonnaise and mustard you have on the sandwich because less mustard and mayonnaise, the more healthy it gets, but it’s still yummy though. You should cut the sandwich in half so you can have half of how much calories there are in the whole sandwich you are eating. This is how I believe it worked for me when I was a 13 year old.

Food food lovers and healthy eaters, how much thought would you put into the quality of ur cooking utensils?

Thursday 17 December 2009

would it matter to you if despite your healthy cooking and healthy eating habits, you may be eating out of cooking utensils that are not healthy or safe for use and you didnt realise it?

I take great care when purchasing cooking utensils. It isn’t just the cost that is important, but quality, what it’s made of and where it comes from. Personally, I avoid aluminium.

Everything is washed and rinsed thoroughly and once an item is damaged it’s replaced and if possible, the old one is put to use where health is not an issue.

There’s hardly any point in preparing a healthy meal and serving it up on a chipped plate that’s harbouring deadly germs. Common sense :)

I hate cooking, but want to eat a healthy and a balanced diet. Any tips on how?

Sunday 29 November 2009

I have decided to transition to a healthy life style for better living and weight loss. However, with my full schedule, it’s difficult for to consume a prepared meal every time, thus I often resort to snacks and ‘fill-me-ups’. I wanted to know how I can learn to eat healthily, and learn to enjoy cooking while also trying to cure my sugar cravings. Any thoughts and tips would be highly appreciated.

breakfast - wholegrain cereal such as weetabix with skimmed milk and fruit

snack - banana

lunch - wholemeal bread chicken and salad sandwich or tuna pasta salad and a piece of fruit

Dinner - grilled meat or fish, salad or veg and small jacket potato or tinned new potatoes.

Snacks - sugar free jello or low fat yoghurt or handful of nuts

________________________________

When you need a chocolate fix instead of wolfing down a bar just have 1 or two cubes and suck them for maximum flavour, minimum calories. Eat fruit or sugar free jelly for sweet puddings.
if you need icecream go for a frozen yoghurt desert rather than traditional icecream - it is much lower in fat - make it an occasional treat.
if you need a sweet snack have a currant bun rather than a cake - less fat sugar and calories.
If you pick in the evenings have a bowl iof chopped fruit rather than sweets.
Lightly salted popcorn is lower in calories than potato crisps.

Is quick cooking oatmeal as healthy as regular oatmeal?

Sunday 8 November 2009

Is quick cooking oatmeal as healthy as regular oatmeal? I want to use quick oatmeal, because it cooks fast, but am not sure if it’s as healthy as regular oatmeal. I was wondering if "quick cooking oatmeal" has undergone some chemical process or been precooked somehow?

Or is it simply finely grained which makes it faster to cook?

If it’s labelled as 100% rolled oats you good either way..

The difference is regular quick oatmeal has a far more empty calories due to using refined sugars and chemicals etc for flavouring…

Any fitness site or body building site will tell you to suck it up and buy your own plain 100% rolled oats..

Add a bit of honey and you have all the power of fibre and protein of oats with all the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial benefits of honey.

Plus it’s a sweetener your body doesn’t have to process like white sugar.

The Bees did it for you.

Is cooking mushrooms in vegetable oil or olive oil in a pan healthy?

Wednesday 4 November 2009

I had previously asked before if sauteed mushrooms were healthy but all i got was mushrooms are healthy lol i want to know if cooking them with either vegetable oil or olive oil in a pan is healthy because I’m on a diet and I don’t want to mess it up, I’ve lost 6 lbs so far!! =)

Congrats on your weight loss!
You could sautee them in extra virgin olive oil. One tablespoon will typically run you 120 calories and it does have quite a bit of fat, but it is considered to be healthy fat (monounsaturated). It also has antioxidants and vitamins and if you think about how big of a part it plays in Mediterranean diets, in which people are typically very healthy, you can see that it is good for you in moderation. I use olive oil when making stirfry meals and it is delicious, just try to limit the amount that you use if you’re watching your weight. Canola oil is a similar option. You could also try using nonstick cooking spray and adding more vegetables and seasonings to get flavor without the oil.
Good luck!
