Whats a healthy way to cook vegetables??…and?

Monday 18 January 2010

Im 17 and want to eat healthy… i wanna ways of cooking white rice or on any tips when cooking healthy i would appreciate it thnx

How to cook rice-

Combine one cup rice and two cups of water in a saucepot and bring to a boil. Clap a lid on it and turn the heat down to Low. If you’re using a gas stove, that’s a little wispy flame. If you’re using an electric stove, that’s like 2 clicks from Off. Here’s the hardest part: resist the urge to lift the lid for 15 minutes. Really. Taste a forkful; it should be tender and there should be a wee bit of water remaining in the bottom of the pot. Replace the lid and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the rice to sit (with the lid on it) on the burner until ready to serve.

My boyfriend does not like to eat veggies, how can i still cook healthy but respect his dislikes?

Wednesday 13 January 2010

there are only a select few veggies that he likes and i want to lose weight, so i normally cook mine and his dishes separate, but i would rather cook for the both of us together.
there are only a select few veggies that he likes and i want to lose weight, so i normally cook mine and his dishes separate, but i would rather cook for the both of us together. the only veg he likes is cut green beens…. :(
My husband was the same way. I solved it by cooking the same for the both of us but did sneaky things that he never caught on to. Also made meals where the meat and starch and veg were separate so he could skip the veg if it was one he hated and then I ate it.If we had grilled chicken breasts and grilled potatoes, I also made grilled veg. Hubby ate the chicken and potato and I did too but I also ate the veg.

Example:
any hotdish that included onions, peppers, celery, etc. I put in twice as much veg and cut the amount of rice or noddles by half. We still had hotdish but it was more veg than anything.
Cutting fat in the way you cook, using less carb based foods(pasta, rice, potato) will help him be healthier too and if you do make the changes gradually, he might not even notice.
I also have been known to shred carrots into the spaghetti sauce. My husband never noticed that he was eating cooked carrots, one of his major ‘hates’ every time we had spaghetti or any pasta with meat sauce.
Also, My hubby actually found that he like some veg raw rather than cooked, after I got him to try a bite. He never really got into the veg thing but ate waaay more of them than he ever knew!

are there any web sites that give the best and healthy ways to cook different food types…?

Monday 4 January 2010

are there any web sites that give the best and healthy ways to cook different food types, such as leafy vegetables, legumes, grains… etc., without losing there important components?

There is no one best way to cook things. How boring that would be! Any good cooking site can give you lots of tasty recipes. Just keep in mind that often the simplest preparation is the healthiest.

Food is to be enjoyed, so enjoy good foods in moderation.

what r some healthy fast and easy food i can cook for kids under 5 yrs old?

Wednesday 30 December 2009

ok I need to cook so healthy food for my kids but im not a good cooker at all!
so what will ya recommend i need something fast and easy.

Part of the trick is to make things they like but in a more healthy way. For example most kids love chicken nuggets and french fries. From McDs they’re very unhealthy but if you do it at home they’re reasonably healthy and taste great. Also kids will love fruits and veggies if they just get used to eating them. I grew up in a house where they were served every day and I love them to this day.

Oven Chicken Nuggets – two options here, both really good

2 skinless boneless chicken breasts
1 ½ cps cereal flakes (I like Product 19 best)
1 tsp Parsley
1 tsp Basil
½ tsp oregano
Salt & Pepper

1 egg
1 Tbls water

Preheat oven to 350*. Trim chicken breasts of all fat and cut into chunks. Mix egg and water in a shallow bowl. Put the cereal in a blender and grind as fine as you like. Place the crushed cereal flakes in a shallow bowl and stir in the herbs, salt and pepper to taste.

Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Dredge the chicken chunks in the egg mixture and then coat them in the cereal a few at a time. Place the chicken chunks on the baking sheet. Bake 20-25 min or until chicken is done through.

OR

2 skinless boneless chicken breasts
1 ½ cps Sour Cream and Chive Potato Chips, crushed
1 cp Ranch dressing

Preheat oven to 350*. Trim chicken breasts of all fat and cut into chunks. Put Ranch dressing in a shallow bowl. Put the chips in a baggie and crush till they are small crumbs.

Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Dredge the chicken chunks in the dressing and then drop them in the baggie with the crumbs a few at a time. Place the coated chicken chunks on the baking sheet. Bake 20-25 min or until chicken is done through.

Oven Fries – I love fries and these are much healthier than those from your favorite fast food place but just as delicious – better than some.

2 med baking potatoes (great with yams also)
½ tablespoon olive oil
1 pinch white sugar – helps with browning
1 pinch ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon Salad Supreme

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil, and coat well with cooking spray. Scrub potatoes well, peel or not as you like and cut into 1/2 inch thick fries. Place cut fries in a lrg bowl.

Sprinkle with the olive oil, sugar and seasonings, toss to coat all fries evenly. Spread on baking sheet in one layer.

After 20 minutes, remove from oven and turn fries with a pancake turner. This will help them brown evenly and keep them from sticking. Bake another 10 minutes, until potatoes are tender and browned. Serve immediately.

To cut the potatoes – first, cut them in half lengthwise. Then take each half and cut it vertically into strips. Lay the strips on their side and cut them vertically in half. The strips from the sides may not be wide enough to cut in half. You should have about 16 - ½” fries from a med potato, more or less.

I am a student living by myself. Does anyone have ideas of what food I can cook fast, simple and healthy?

Saturday 26 December 2009

I almost eat the same meal everyday. Am getting sick of it.
Does anyone can give me ideas of foods that I can cook fast, simple and healthy? (if possible, the ingredients are not expensive as well)
I don’t have much time for cooking, so 15 minutes are like the maximum if possible from the preparation until done.

It would be great If u can give me around 7 different foods to cook, so I can eat different meals everyday in a week ^^

Thank you very much in advance! =)

Assume you’re not a vegetarian?
1) spaghetti & meatballs! EASY, fast, cheap! You can buy premade meatballs at the store in the fridge section (or vegetarian ones in the refrigerated ‘health’ section of the grocery store); storebought sauce, and a salad-in-a-bag!

2) Frittata! Heat up some chopped veggies in a pan (or microwave!) - anything goes, such as: onions, broccoli, red & green peppers, tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, asparagus, mixed veg from freezer section, etc., until they are tender. Add meat if you wish (precooked chicken from those ziplock containers, or leftover hamburg, or pieces of deli sliced ham, whatever) and heat through. Then scramble some eggs in a bowl (say, 2-3 for a large-ish frittata), add a little salt and pepper, pour on top of the veggies and shake a little bit while it cooks (helps it heat through well, you could also just let it sit there not moving!). Maybe takes about 10 minutes. Don’t stir it, just let it make a ‘pancake’ form. Sprinkle cheese on top if you wish! Great with a salad and some crusty bread, like Italian, which can be more inexpensive than French or whole grain types.

3) English Muffin Pizzas! SUPER easy and fast. Just toast up some english muffins, spread pizza sauce on each half, top with shredded cheese, any meats and vegs you like, and bake in the oven at 350 (or put under broiler) until cheese melts!

4) Tomatoes and Rice - this is great with hamburgers (or veggie burgers!): make a few cups of minute rice, mix it with a can of canned tomatoes (buy them chopped or diced, makes it easier), heat up in the micro and serve with a burger and some salad. The rice & tomatoes will be kind of like a soup, but you can make it as dry or ’soupy’ as you like by varying the amt. of canned tomato juice you use!

5) My Mom’s Chop Suey: This is definitely not real chop suey. I’m not even sure what chop suey is, but this stuff my Mom makes is fantastic, easy and cheap! Boil some elbow or spiral macaroni. While that’s cooking, cook some chopped veggies in a pan until tender (we use mushrooms, green peppers & onion). Once cooked, put in a bowl and use the pan to brown some ground beef/turkey or ‘veggie grounds’. Put the noodles & beef into the bowl with the veggies, add some heated (in the micro) spaghetti sauce and shake-on real parmesan! Great with pieces of toast buttered and sprinkled with garlic powder.

6) Chicken caesar pita sandwich: buy a bag of caesar salad, some pre-cooked chicken from the deli section or in one of those red-lidded ziplock containers, stuff them into a pita and pour on the dressing that came with the salad! Good with sliced apples.

7) Very easy Mexican casserole: This is pretty inexpensive, and will last several days! Make it on a day when you have a little extra time before dinner - you can study or whatever while it’s cooking. Then you can just reheat it for the next 2 or 3 days. It’s made of layers of ingredients in a 8×10 glass baking dish (or whatever you have handy - cast iron skillet would work, or casserole dish… even a silicone loaf pan would work!). Preheat the oven to 350. Crush up some toritilla chips and layer them in the bottom of the pan. In any order you wish, add these ingredients as layers: canned or frozen corn (at room temp), refried beans from a can, can of black beans (optional), jar of inexpensive salsa, another layer of crushed chips, a can of sliced green chiles (optional!), and then on the top layer, sprinkle shredded cheddar or jack cheese. Bake for about 1/2 hr to 45 min (depends on how thick your layers are, the size of the pan, etc.). This is really good with a lettuce & tomato salad.

Good luck & happy cooking!!!

what can i eat that is lowfat foods-i dont know how to cook healthy?

Wednesday 18 November 2009

i have ulcers and was told by the ER i can no longer eat fatty foods i have to watch my diet for the rest of my life, WHAT DO I EAT, I’VE NEVER BEEN ON A DIET. I KNOW I’M SUPPOSE TO EAT LOWFAT FOODS. what is diet foods how do i prepare my foods???? give detail thks.

Ive been on weight watchers since 2005 and it is NOT a diet. It is a lifestyle change. They tell you that you can eat what you want but you best be carefull if you dont want to starve all day. My best bet, try to get rid of red-meat. I’m not saying never eat it again but all in all its not very healthy for you. Chicken(ground or whole) Turkey(ground or whole) a very heart healthy foods. Whole grain everything is also the best way to go. Try to keep away from anything white. Mayo, sugar, flour.. ect.

If you drink soda… stop. Try some crystal light water packets. Excellent taste and replenishes your body and keeps it hydrated. Also if your going to cook with red meat use LEAN ground beef. I buy the leanest out there. Its a bit more expensive but its better for you in the long run. And cook with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and even Canola oil. Stay away from the Veg. oil!!

There is nothing wrong with going out to eat either but stick to something that you know will fill you up but yet keep you healthy. Stick to maybe a salad but instead of the FRIED chicken ask for it to be grilled. Instead of fries ask for baked potatoe. Think I may be getting my point across to. Also little snacks will help you with your hunger but be smart with it. Anything with alot of fiber in it will help you be healthy and stop your hunger pains.

Salad dressings… BE CAREFULL!!! I find that light Italian taste good and is not loaded with calories. And watch your labels! Fat free is not always the best way to go. Stay away from Enriched flours and such.

Good luck. There is so much support on the internet and if you’ve got the extra money I would recommend Weight Watchers for anybody and everybody!! I didn’t even go to the meetings(which I would recommend it) and lost 50 pounds in a year and a half.
