where can I buy Dr. Pitcairn’s Healthy Powder ingredients for dogs/cats in Canada?

18 January 2010

I am picking up my puppy in four weeks and after all of my research into the dog food industry & their ingredients from rendering plants I’ve decided to feed my dog healthy home cooked meals. A wonderful resource is Dr. Pitcairn’s book. I would like to make his advised Healthy Powder but I don’t know where to purchase the ingredients here in Canada. I live in Northern Ontario & we have no health food stores, so I would have to order from an online source. I would appreciate any help. These are the ingredients that I need: nutritional yeast, lecithin granules, kelp powder, bone meal. We only have 1 small grocery store in the town that I live & they don’t carry any of these items.

I looked online and wasn’t able to find anything helpful for you. Good luck finding what you need, just keep googling and maybe you will find something.

Healthy Cooking, recipe modifications?

18 January 2010

I’m looking for tips and tricks in modifying recipes to make them low-fat and low-calorie. Thanks :]

common things to do are replace oils with applesauce in baked goods like muffins or cakes, use egg whites to bake with, instead of whole eggs. Use Splenda baking mix in baked items where you have to add sugar, it’ll cut calories in half.
Replace butters with olive oil in cooked foods, and saute veggies with a light cooking spray like PAM olive oil. Bake instead of fry; fish and chicken. Use "butter" spritzers instead of a whole pat.
Cut out using all processed condiments like ketchup or sauces. Experiment with different flavors of vinegar (I like raspberry). Stay away from rice, pasta, potatoes, corn, and carrots- they’re all high in starchy sugars. Eat more cauliflower (you can boil and mash it as a potato substitute) cabbage, spinach, wax beans, mushrooms, and peppers. Learn to love spices, try different mixes of them from specialty stores, like pesto mixes from the Italian stores, or 5 Star powder from Asian stores.

Whats a healthy way to cook vegetables??…and?

18 January 2010

Im 17 and want to eat healthy… i wanna ways of cooking white rice or on any tips when cooking healthy i would appreciate it thnx

How to cook rice-

Combine one cup rice and two cups of water in a saucepot and bring to a boil. Clap a lid on it and turn the heat down to Low. If you’re using a gas stove, that’s a little wispy flame. If you’re using an electric stove, that’s like 2 clicks from Off. Here’s the hardest part: resist the urge to lift the lid for 15 minutes. Really. Taste a forkful; it should be tender and there should be a wee bit of water remaining in the bottom of the pot. Replace the lid and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the rice to sit (with the lid on it) on the burner until ready to serve.

Does anyone know a good vegitarian cook books?

13 January 2010

I am in 10th grade and just decided to become a vegi because of the effects raising meat has on the enviorment. How do I stay a healthy person and not eat meat?

Try googling vegetarianism. You will get a ton of hits that include recipes and advice for becoming veg. The best way to start is to start slowly. If you love burgers or chicken, cut out all other meat except those. Slowly add more fruits and vegetables. Start trying the non-meat versions, like veggieburgers instead of hamburgers. The more slowly you make the transition, the less likely you are to ditch the whole thing as soon as you get a craving for meat. Remember, even if you cut out all meat except for your very favorite, you are helping the environment.

There are a lot of eco-friendly ideas on my Yahoo!Group:

My boyfriend does not like to eat veggies, how can i still cook healthy but respect his dislikes?

13 January 2010

there are only a select few veggies that he likes and i want to lose weight, so i normally cook mine and his dishes separate, but i would rather cook for the both of us together.
there are only a select few veggies that he likes and i want to lose weight, so i normally cook mine and his dishes separate, but i would rather cook for the both of us together. the only veg he likes is cut green beens…. :(
My husband was the same way. I solved it by cooking the same for the both of us but did sneaky things that he never caught on to. Also made meals where the meat and starch and veg were separate so he could skip the veg if it was one he hated and then I ate it.If we had grilled chicken breasts and grilled potatoes, I also made grilled veg. Hubby ate the chicken and potato and I did too but I also ate the veg.

Example:
any hotdish that included onions, peppers, celery, etc. I put in twice as much veg and cut the amount of rice or noddles by half. We still had hotdish but it was more veg than anything.
Cutting fat in the way you cook, using less carb based foods(pasta, rice, potato) will help him be healthier too and if you do make the changes gradually, he might not even notice.
I also have been known to shred carrots into the spaghetti sauce. My husband never noticed that he was eating cooked carrots, one of his major ‘hates’ every time we had spaghetti or any pasta with meat sauce.
Also, My hubby actually found that he like some veg raw rather than cooked, after I got him to try a bite. He never really got into the veg thing but ate waaay more of them than he ever knew!
